New Rules!

We have had to implement some new rules to try to curb the amount of incidents of conflict between students.

1. No, third person in. (we have had problems where students try and help their friends, but usually by assaulting their peers.  Tell people to stop and get help.)
2. Hands Off! (rather than grabbing or tackling we are encouraging the use of voice. Loud, Clear and Assertive)
3. Get Out! (most of our regular offenders tend to be too angry to make good decisions.  We want them to take a time out, calm down and when they are more rational try and talk it out)

Hopefully, this helps to calm things down.

Knotty Dotters Marimba Band

Knotty Dotters Marimba Band came and played for the students of Gibsons Elementary.  A highlight was when Eilis from kindergarten came up and sang with the band!

Thank you Pastimes!

Thank you Pastimes Toys in Sechelt!
They gave us a great deal on Playmobil and Lego sets.  The class had money from PAC and from fundraising, which we used to buy some new centers.
In a class meeting we took a vote on what type of toys the students wanted to add to our class.  We already had many craft, art and paper doll centers, but lacked a lot of imaginative play activities.
I know many of the students are going to be very excited to get imaginative with these toys!

Being Nice to One Another

We have had several incidents where students have not been very nice to each other.  Teasing has increased and has resulted in negative situations at recess and lunch.  Our focus therefore, will be on: being kind and dealing appropriately with bullying.

We will be using our studies on Jake Drake: Bully Buster and Eliminating Bullying to help with these situations.  Mrs. Luporini also was invited into a class meeting to discuss school expectations with the group.

Hopefully, this will help turn around things and we can end the year on a positive note.

Realism

Our next artist and style was the realism of Robert Bateman.
We used his style to focus on proportion and detail to make realistic looking drawings.

Telling Time

In math, we are currently looking at measurement.  We are starting this unit with telling time to the minute on digital and analog clocks.

Cross Canada Journal

Today, students wrote fictional journals as though they crossed Canada by car.  They wrote about what they would see in the different regions of Canada.  This was based on our current studies of Canada.

Canada

We have been focussing on Canada in Social Studies.
We just finished up our maps of Canada labelling: provinces, territories, capitals and oceans.

Recycling and Organizing

Today, we organized our work and recycled papers.
This will help as we head into summer by streamlining our supplies and work.

(Some had more work than others!)

Novel Study

The students in Division 7, who stay with Mr. Sullivan during reading period, began a new novel study today.  We will be reading Jake Drake: Bully Buster.  It will be done as somewhat of a formal novel study format, to educate students of the expectations during these types of activities.  Our next novel study will be done in more a contemporary literature circle format.
